This is very sad. It's a horrible fate to grow up in Cuba under the system that forces young women to become prostitutes because they have no other alternative. Their choices are: to barely live with a $10.00 a month salary, get a raft and risk dying in the ocean to get to USA or become a jinetera. That's what Castro did for the people. It's a tragedy.

this is sad and shi*ty, indeed and a reflection of the bad opportunities in cuba, BUT there is this type of prostitution in every developing country.. in fact, prostitution has gotten worse in Russia and former soviet union states (e.g., Ukraine), since the fall of communism..
if (when) castro system falls, prostitution will not go away in Cuba , may (and probably) even get worse.. just look at the Costa Rican example.. costa rica has the best economy (and free market) in Central america, yet the worst prostitution problem.. in fact, i would say that prostitution is much more open and prevlanent in san jose, CR than habana.. that is fact.. again, I am not supporting present cuba, just saying that you can't isolate the case.

Soy cubana y ante todo te digo que no estoy de acuerdo con lo que planteas de la mujer cubana porque ante todo nosotras tenemos orgullo y sobre todo moral,y no estamos bagabundeando por las calles buscando lo que en ocasiones nos señalas. Quiero decirte que debes sentir bochorno de pensar asi ya que eres cubano y sobre todo eres santiaguero, provincia donde la mujer tiene buena preparacion , educacion y sobre todo buenos modales , ademas es una provincia donde se recogen gran parte de nuestra historia. Far more tragic, I think, is the emasculation of Cuban men who allow their womenfolk to thus degrade themselves because it is foreigners who enjoy all rights in Cuba, not Cubans.
Those who believe when Cuba is free this situation will continue unchecked are in for a rude awakening. In the future if an old Spaniard or Italian so much as looks askance at a Cuban girl he will be have cause to regret that he ever set foot in Cuba. If the Cuban woman herself doesn't cut him to pieces, then surely every Cuban man within sight will.

I understand all the emotions on this site because I fell in love without knowing it to a jinetera in Cuba. I offered her substantial financial support on a monthly basis on the condition that she would leave prostitution because she no longer had an excuse. Unfortunately I discovered that she never left the job or intends to leave it. So I don't buy the argument that Cubanas are doing it out of need, or because things are tough in Cuba. America is the leader of the free world and women have all the options available to them there yet prostitution is every where and on a much greater scale and in every form you can imagine. This is the oldest profession in the world and will stay with us no matter what. It is a multi billion dollar industry. Money is the root of all evil, period.
